The CPS finally agreed to drop proceedings against Virginia Wheeler, the Defence Editor of The Sun newspaper, on 5th June. The Attorney-General entered a nolle prosequi to bring proceedings to an end. The decision of the CPS to request the nolle prosequi is welcomed as it has been clear for a considerable time and prior to her initial charge that the prosecution of Ms Wheeler was not in the public interest. Had the matter proceeded to trial, Ms Wheeler would have vigorously defended her position. Ms Wheeler was represented by Steven Bird and Philippa Southwell and as advocates by Tim Greene (Birds Solicitors) and James Wood QC of Doughty Street chambers.
