Practice and background
Allan is a consultant barrister and was called to the Bar in 2000. Since then he has specialised in immigration law, with a particular emphasis on the European right of free movement, and human rights. He represents and advises private and corporate clients on all aspects of immigration law at first instance and all levels of the judicial system. He acts as an immigration expert in family proceedings and has an in-depth understanding of the rights of the child in immigration proceedings. He advises employers on Civil Penalties for employing illegal workers and immigration compliance. Allan is able to assist businesses to navigate the new immigration system post-Brexit.
Allan is a recommended barrister by Chambers UK 2020 with quotes “He manages to bring together a good corporate head and a human rights heart” and “An excellent junior, especially with EEA and LGBT-related cases”. He was shortlisted for the award ‘Outstanding Contribution to Diversity and Inclusion’ by Chambers UK Bar awards 2020.

Allan was widely quoted in the press in relation to Modern Slavery Act, including The Times and LexisNexis. He is a regular contributor to Counsel Magazine and published his article The Recognition or Refugees Based on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identify in the UK in the Birkbeck Law Review.
Associated Work
Allan has a strong interest in LGBT rights and is a former trustee and current volunteer with the UK Lesbian and Gay Immigration Group, which campaigns for the better treatment of LGBT asylum seekers. He is a founding member of the Transgender Equality Legal Initiative, which brings together activists, lawyers, politicians and other interested parties to further equality under the law for transgender persons. With others, Allan recently drafted an amicus curiae brief, focusing on international human rights law, on behalf of ILGA-Europe and TGEU, to the Romanian Constitutional Court relating to a proposed law concerning so-called ‘gender ideology’,
He is a visiting tutor at the University of Law and was a part-time tutor at Kaplan Law School. He is an advocacy trainer for the Inner Temple.

Allan went to school in Dublin and obtained his lower degree at London Metropolitan University and his higher degree from the University of Westminster.
